Coffee Mill Grinder
A coffee mill / grinder exists to make grinding your own coffee beans simple. The mills, also called burr grinders, use wheels to produce a variety of grinds, from very fine espresso grinds to coarser grinds for use in percolators. These units are larger and more expensive than standard blade grinders; however, the increased capacity and ability to select from a number of different grinds make them ideal choices for the most discerning coffee drinker. To get a feel for whats out there, we will cover three popular Coffee Mill Grinders.
The Cool Grind 503 from Capresso has an extra-large 3.5 ounce grinding bowl that lets you grind enough beans to make 15 cups of coffee. A single push-and-release button activates the motor. You can hold the button for continuous processing or touch and release for pulse-like grinding. Depending on the processing time, you can achieve a coarser grind or a finer grind. For best results, you should grind in small batches for 10-second intervals, until the desired grind is achieved. Most types take less than 30 seconds total.
The Hamilton Beach Custom Grind Deluxe 15-Cup Coffee Grinder 80374 features a removable stainless-steel grinding chamber that is capable of grinding enough for 15 cups of coffee. There are measurement lines inside the grinding bowl and a slide lever on the front of the unit with settings for 4, 8, 12, or 15 cups that take the guesswork out of grinding. A dial grind selector has settings for percolator, drip, or espresso ground coffee.
You just add beans, pick your settings, and press the on/off button. The Custom Grind times the grinding based on the number of cups and fineness selected. The unit shuts off automatically when done. Other handy features include a retractable cord, transparent cover, coffee measuring scoop, and brush.
The Ascaso Innova I-1 Coffee Grinder is designed to handle the task of grinding espresso coffee. The grinder body has a 54mm hardened steel flat grinding wheel, which turns at a rate of 700 rpm. The grinding wheels are mounted on a heavy-duty platform made of brass. A large, clear-plastic bean hopper sits on top of the grinder and has a removable lid for easy filling. The large hopper holds up to 600 grams (about 21 ounces) of beans. Because the unit is designed primarily for espresso grinding, there is a special filter holder/fork on the front of the machine, which accommodates espresso filters. The filter holder is positioned just below the grounds spout so the coffee is conveniently dispensed directly into the filter. A pushbutton grind switch directly behind the filter holder starts the grinding when the holder is pressed against it. An on/off button on the side of the machine activates the power.
That has been just three of many coffee mill grinders available. As you can see, they are not all the same, and some research needs to be done before selecting which is the perfect coffee mill grinder for you.
