Coffee Frappe
The Coffee Frappe is a simple drink that is essentially an iced coffee that sometimes includes milk and may have a layer of foam on top. The coffee frappe is well known as a refreshing coffee drink and has become so well accepted and popular that it is even served in such mass market restaurants as McDonald's. The first coffee frappe is credited to a Nestle employee in 1957.
The traditional coffee frappe is made with instant coffee, iced water, sugar, and optionally evaporated milk. You make it by first putting together the instant coffee, sugar, and a little water and shaking it in a shaker. When you mix these particular ingredients in this way you end up with a shaker full of flavorful coffee foam. You then pour this flavorful foam into a glass. Next, you add more ice water and some evaporated milk. The ratio of foam to milk to water is a matter of personal taste. Once you have done this you add a couple ice cubes, a straw, and then you have a coffee frappe.
As you can see the drink is very simple to make. The reason you add the ice cubes is not just to keep the drink cold. When the person drinking the coffee frappe moves the straw, the cubes serve the purpose of mixing the drink. As the cubes are tussled in the glass, the flavor filled coffee foam is mixed into the ice water/milk below and thus brings the flavor down to the point of intake for the straw. This simple process is a natural way for someone to enjoy all of the flavors of the drink with each sip. Take away any one element, the straw or the cubes, and the person drinking the coffee frappe would end up first drinking cold water/milk and then scooping up sugary coffee foam. If this were the case the coffee frappe would never have become so popular.
But, because Nestle perfected the presentation of the drink and methods by which it is most commonly served, we can all enjoy this wonderfully tasty coffee drink whenever we need a bit of refreshment, with the little kick of energy that comes from the coffee.
