Chicory Coffee
When discussing chicory as it relates to Chicory Coffee, we are discussing root chicory. The roots of the chicory are cultivated then processed by baking and then grinding the baked chicory root into a grind that is blended with traditional coffee to make chicory coffee. The amount of chicory in each blend depends on who makes the blend. There are several companies that offer their own unique blends of chicory coffee.
The origin of chicory coffee, and acceptance of it, is interesting. Originally, the Germans in the 1700's used it to replace their coffee in order to avoid taxes imposed by Napoleon. During this time of taxes by Napoleon the French also followed suit from the Germans and began using chicory as a replacement for coffee. The practice was brought to New Orleans in the United States by the French in the 18th century. The Americans brought together the process of drinking 100 percent chicory to the drinking of a chicory and coffee blend. For the Americans it was partially a factor of taste and partially a factor of price. The price of chicory is less than that of coffee. Therefore the Americans used it as a way to extend their supplies of coffee and to save money.
One of the most popular makers of a chicory coffee is Cafe Du Monde. Their blend is world renowned and is the standard to which other chicory coffees are compared. If you are going to try a chicory coffee, Cafe Du Monde is the one to get. Cafe Du Monde suggests that you try the coffee Au Lait.
